River profile

River profile (Flussvermessung) is the periodic geodetic survey of Swiss watercourses operated by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The dataset exposes the four tables produced by the programme: cross-sections (Querprofile), longitudinal profiles (Längenprofile), special objects (Sonderobjekte) and benchmarks (Versicherungspunkte).

Result order and pagination

Results are returned in no particular order and a single query is capped at 10 000 rows. Queries that exceed the cap are rejected rather than truncated. Larger datasets are retrieved by partitioning into smaller filter windows (typically by gwlNo or gewissAddress) and iterating. See Pagination for details.

Coordinate and elevation reference

Survey records are based on the CH1903+ reference frame; the elevation reference frame is the Swiss levelling network of 1902 (LN02).

GEWISS address

GEWISS_Adr (API field gewissAddress) is used as the identifier for objects surveyed along a watercourse (benchmarks, cross-sections, special objects). It is based on the length of the geometries in the Digital Watercourse Network DGN25 (1999) and, at the time, generally corresponded to the distance from the river mouth to the object with a given GEWISS address. As watercourses have partly shifted over time, the difference between two GEWISS addresses today corresponds in many cases only approximately to the actual along-flow distance.

height	Float	Hoehe — Elevation (LN02).

Download data

The survey data is available as prepared files (.zip) for direct download. The live/ folder is organised by river, watercourse number and GEWISS window and holds one file per table (cross sections, longitudinal profiles, special objects, benchmarks); full-bundle/ contains the entire dataset in a single archive. For targeted, filtered extracts, use the GraphQL API.

Notes

• Each row in cross_sections, longitudinal_profiles and special_objects carries rowIndex, which gives the position of the record within the original survey file.
• Survey campaigns are repeated; a single GEWISS address may therefore appear with multiple surveyDate values across campaigns.
